Teach Wisely, Do More Interesting Stuff

Why do many college students lack the creative problem solving, critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills needed for success? The main reason is that conventional assessment methods, such as standardized automated multiple-choice tests, discourage higher-level learning. On the other hand, teachers who face increasing class sizes and less face-to-face interaction with students cannot afford managing and grading manually more interesting complex assignments. A better approach and system are needed.

How do we develop a better environment to boost learning in large classes? Simplistic peer grading is not a good solution because it is uninspiring – students do not have “skin in the game” to provide quality feedback that adds value. Computer grading is not great either because computational algorithms, no matter how sophisticated, cannot create and appreciate thematically evocative and emotionally rich essays, aesthetically stunning pictures or original and elegant problem solutions. An innovative social learning information system grounded in research and crafted to meet cognitive and emotional needs of the modern youth will be a better environment to advance creativity, critical thinking and communication skills.

What is Mobius SLIP? This is a web-based Learning Management System (LMS) that facilitates complex assignments and social learning interaction among students. It takes you beyond simplistic peer grading to create a double-looped social learning environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration, and delivers advanced performance analytics and assurance of learning. Students learn to create and present their work, and to give and receive feedback from multiple peers. Instructors are empowered with easy assignment logistics, more intelligent, reliable and valid assessment, and targeted guidance to students.
